Reading. Read the passage and choose the correct answer.

People today are always thinking about the time. There never seems to be enough time to do all the things we want to do. Believe it or not, there was a time before time was so important. It was enough to know that the sun was out. That meant it was daytime. During these days when the clock seems to control us, doesn’t that sound kind of nice?

Time can mean a lot of different things. That’s one way we know how important it is for us. We have so many words about it! The smallest amount of time we can measure is called a second. When you put 60 seconds together, you get one minute. If you take 60 minutes, you get one hour. The hands of the clock go all the way around twice in 24 hours, giving us one day.

If you want to look at time beyond one day, you leave the clock and look at a calendar instead. There are about 30 days in one month. Some months have an extra day; February has a couple less. There are 12 months in one year. Time never stops.

What are people always thinking about these days?

Reading. Read the passage and choose the correct answer.

Mary Todd Lincoln was born on December 13, 1818, in Lexington, Kentucky. She was born into a wealthy Kentucky family, though her mother died when she was seven. The following year, her father married Betsy Humphries. The family lived in a fourteen room Kentucky mansion, which Mary shared with her 14 brothers and sisters! Her father was close friends with Kentucky political leader Henry Clay, who engendered a love of politics within Mary.

Like many young woman of her day, Mary left school as a teenager to attend finishing school, where she studied drama, dance, music, social graces, and learned to speak French fluently. In 1839, Mary moved to Springfield, Illinois to live with her sister, Elizabeth. While living in Illinois, Mary was courted by both Stephen A. Douglas and Abraham Lincoln, though it was Lincoln whom she would become engaged to. Despite the engagement, the pair broke up before becoming engaged again. They were finally married on November 4, 1842, at Mary’s sister’s home in Springfield. By marrying Lincoln, Mary Todd gave up a life of opulence, for one of general poverty. Lincoln had not yet become a successful lawyer and was crushed by debt. Mary’s family did not approve of Lincoln, citing his awkward appearance and humble upbringing.

Soon, however, Lincoln’s reputation as a lawyer grew and the pair were able to purchase a house in Springfield. Mary would have four boys: Robert, Eddie, Tad, and Willie. Mary raised the children at home while Lincoln traveled to courts throughout the state to argue cases and explain the law.

Many hundred years ago there were many villages and few towns in England. The villagers liked to go into the forests and the fields when spring came. On the first Sunday of May they usually took a tree back with them and put it in the center of the village. The children danced round it and the men and the women took part in games around it.
Later the international working class made the First of May their day of solidarity. The First May Day was celebrated in England in 1890. In London the workers marched from all places to a meeting in Hype Park. This demonstration showed their unity and solidarity.

Reading. Read the passage and choose the correct answer

Microscopes are tools that scientists use to make observations. When scientists make observations, they record their data. They will then share it with other scientists.

Even student scientists, like you, can use a microscope. With a microscope, you can see things that are too tiny to see with your eyes. Microscopes magnify things. They make them look bigger than they really are. Many things in science can be studied under a microscope.

Light microscopes have been used for a long time. Many different inventors worked on making the microscope. Robert Hooke and Anton Van Leeuwenhoek were two of its early inventors in the 1500s. Today’s light microscopes work better than early ones. Some can magnify things 1,000 times! A light microscope uses two glass lenses. The lenses are inside a short tube. A light bulb shines under the object you are looking at. It helps you see the object clearly. Little knobs like wheels can be turned to make the view sharp and clear.

Thanks to scientists, we know a lot about microscopes and how they work. You see a whole new world under a microscope. You just have to look!
