Galileo Galilei was born in the year 1564 in the town of Pisa, Italy. When he was 20 years old, he was studying in Pisa. His father wanted him to be a doctor, but Galileo was bored with school except for math. Because math was the one subject where he was doing well, the court mathematician offered to tutor him privately so he could become a qualified mathematician. Galileo’s father was disappointed, but he agreed.

Because he needed to earn money, Galileo began experimenting with different things, trying to come up with some sort of invention that he could sell for money. He had a little bit of success with his invention that was like a compass that could be used to measure plots of land. He had already experimented with pendulums, thermometers, and magnets.

When he heard that a Dutch inventor had invented something called a spyglass, but was keeping it a secret, Galileo decided to work on one of his own. Within 24 hours, he had invented a telescope that could magnify things to make them appear ten times larger than real life.

One night, he pointed his telescope toward the sky, and made his first of many space observations: the moon was not smooth, like everyone thought. The moon was covered in bumps and craters. As technology has improved, first Galileo, and then many others, have made improvements on the telescope, the wonderful device that allows us to see from a distance.

Where was Galileo Galilei studying when he was 20?

  • He was studying in Pisa.

You can cut a whole thing into equal parts. This lets everyone have a fair share. Each of the parts is called a fraction. Fractions have special names. The names tell us how many pieces of that size would be needed to make a whole.

Someone is cutting a pie.  He/she is being careful to make equal parts. When he/she is done, he/she will have eight slices that are all the same size. Each slice is called one-eighth.

A single slice is one of the eight pieces needed to make the whole pie. Because none of the pieces are gone yet, it is still a whole. No matter how many pieces the pie is cut into, if you have all the pieces, it is still a whole.

The more pieces that are cut, the smaller the pieces have to be. If the pie is cut into only three pieces, the pieces will be pretty big. Each of the pieces will be called one-third. If the pie is cut into five pieces, the pieces have to be a little smaller. You have to get two more slices out of the pie. Each piece is called one-fifth. Other names are one-fourth for four parts, one-half for two parts and one-sixth for six parts.

What is a fraction?

  • part a whole

We can watch things around us move. When something is in motion, it changes its position. Objects can move from one place to another. They can move in many directions. If you roll a ball, it might move in a straight line. It might also move in a curve. A swing can move back and forth. A light switch can move up and down. Fans have blades that move in a circle. If you want to know if something is moving, you can compare it to other things around it that are not moving. If the things behind the object are changing, the object is probably moving. If they are not changing, the object is probably not moving.

You can measure the distance an object moves.

Just measure the distance between where it was when it started to move and where it was when it stopped. Distance can be measured in inches, feet, yards or miles. Those measurements are in the customary system. It can also be measured in millimeters, centimeters, meters and kilometers. Those measurements are in the metric system.

When something is in motion, what does it change?

Artists use color to create patterns. Color can also show different moods. Bright colors make us feel happy and energetic. Dark colors make us feel calm or sad.

The primary colors are red, yellow, and blue. They are the colors that can be mixed together to make different colors. Mixing two primary colors makes a secondary color. The secondary colors are orange, green, and violet (purple). Orange is made by mixing yellow and red. Green is made by mixing yellow and blue. Violet is made by mixing red and blue.

Intermediate colors can be made by mixing a primary and a secondary color together. Some intermediate colors are blue violet and red orange. Black, white, and gray are special colors. They are called neutral colors. Colors have been organized into a color wheel. It shows the three primary colors, the three secondary colors, and the six intermediate colors. Artists use the color wheel. It helps them know which colors they want to use together.

Coca-Cola is now a permanent part of world culture. People know and drink Coca-Cola all over the world.
It is said that the Coca-Cola bottle is the most recognized object in the world. And the famous Coca-Cola logo is the most famous logo in the world. Unlike any other famous commercial logo, it has not changed in 100 years!
But the story of Coca-Cola is even older than that. It was in 1886 that John Pemberton, a druggist in Atlanta, Georgia, invented a new type of syrup, using coca leaves, sugar and cola nuts, plus a few other secret ingredients! Pemberton sold it as a medicine; and with its coca, it must have made people feel good!

Candler was the man who really invented the drink Coca-Cola. At first he sold it in his drugstore; then he began selling the syrup to other drugstores, who used it with their soda fountains. Candler also advertised his new drink, and soon people were going to drugstores just to get a drink of Coca-Cola.
Before long, other people became interested in the product, including a couple of businessmen who wanted to sell it in bottles. Candler sold them a license to bottle the drink. The famous bottle, with its very distinctive shape, was designed in 1916.

Today, Coca-Cola is made in countries all over the world. It is the world's most popular drink.

Europeans play football, and Americans play football; but surprisingly they do not play the same game. American football is played by men wearing helmets and protective clothing; the ball is oval. European football is played with a round ball, by people wearing just socks, shorts, a shirt, and football boots.

Americans have another popular outdoor game too; baseball - a classic American game, that is only played seriously in North America. In Britain, a few people play an "ancestor" of baseball, called "rounders" - but it is not a popular sport.

In today's "global village", lifestyles have become international.

Besides these big sports, America of course has basketball - perhaps the most successful "export" invented at Springfield College, Massachusetts, in 1891. Basketball is quite certainly an "American game". Basketball has become much more popular in other countries than any other American team sport.

Until the 1960's, team sports were not played on a global scale. In Europe, people played European games, and in North America American games were played. The only real "global" sports were individual sports, such as golf and tennis.

Only two parts of the USA are mild or warm in winter — a) the coasts, especially Florida and southern California, and b) the southern part of the Mississippi basin.
Everywhere else it gets cold, often very cold. By the end of November, many American states are often covered in snow; and although recent winters have been less cold, sport in winter usually means snow sports, or indoor sports.

By January, many people in North America will have temperatures of -30°C; not every day, of course, but such low temperatures are not rare. In Chicago course, but such low temperatures are not rare. In Chicago and Minneapolis, the temperature can fall below -400.
When it is very cold, especially when there is a cold wind, few people want to go outside, unless they have to; but on sunny winter days, winter sports are popular.
In the large flat regions in the middle of North America, the most popular winter sports are snowmobiling, snow-shoeing and cross-country skiing. Ice-skating is popular too; lakes and rivers freeze, and many towns and cities have free open-air skating rinks. In many places, these are flood-lit after dark, so that people can enjoy skating in the evening.
However, for many people, real "winter sports" means downhill skiing; and in the USA, there are two principal areas for this; the Adirondack Mountains in the North East, and the Rockies in the west.

How is the weather in the southern California?
